It had been in basement storage for decades! I was told it was mine if I wanted it. It's a Tandberg 10XD and it has classy real wood sides. I re-spliced the tape but it the entire thing is blank (hall radio station used this tape for everything and it was erased once a week when in use)

This is my childhood, encapsulized. You could get an album on vinyl, cassette, 8 track, or reel-to-reel. I want that thing.

WHAT DORM DOES THIS??? Seriously, you've posted about getting a drill press from there, now this thing, and they gave you $5k to buy a kart IIRC. All my dorm had were two old pool tables.

So cool, I love old tech. I will have to find my 70's modem, made in England and incased in a well crafted dovetail cornered wooden box. Must have been left behind from some time traveler as the was no Internet when it was built.

If it works it's a hell of a deal. If it doesn't, Turdbergs are a PITA to work on. If you decide to take on the challenge, look here:

Seriously! All my dorm had was shitty food and nasty communal lounge couches.

Any recommendations on some general maintenance I should perform to it? I have an old pioneer RT-707 like this one at home, so I'm interested to see how this Tandberg is different.

Well, $6k, but who is counting? I just find a lot of weird and cool stuff because as the director of the race program, I have keys to places in the building no students are allowed to go (like deep storage). And being a university, it is harder to throw away something than it is to put it in storage.

Sweet. Old tape machines are fun, though I mostly use them as effects units these days. There's nothing like pumping a drum track through one with the needle pegged firmly in the red. At home I have a Teac 3440, Tascam Model 8, Fostex Model 80, and some old Akai piece of shit at home. The Teac ones are my favorites because their input circuits have so much overhead.

In general, keep the heads and tape path clean, check the mechanism for dried grease, and take a quick peek at the circuit boards to see if any caps are leaking. Not sure if the Tandberg is direct drive like your 707 or uses a belt. If it has a belt-driven capstan, you will likely need to replace the belt. Noisy pots and switches are common after long storage periods, so get some DeOxIt spray.

The way that tape is broken indicates a likely problem with the brakes, so FF/REW with caution.

When properly working, it's a thing of beauty.
